Knowledge gaps and conservation priorities for west African chelonians

چکیده
Abstract Defining priorities is important both in research and conservation, especially when knowledge gaps are hindering successful management. In this review, we quantify the for all non-marine West African chelonians based on 21 criteria. Additionally, combine these with each species’ maximum size, range presence nationally protected areas, IUCN Red List or TFTSG provisional status to introduce a ranking of species conservation priority region. Our analyses revealed divergence between which lacking studies would benefit most from actions, though Cyclanorbis elegans that least-known most-in-need conservation. Broadly, Pelomedusidae greatest need research, yet they also collectively least threatened. Conversely, Trionychidae Testudinidae have received greater attention cases, however, two families represent amongst chelonians. enabled us evaluate criteria representing aspects chelonian biology been overlooked by scientific community. Priorities future include reproductive long-term population studies, critical informing actions evaluating results those actions.

The challenge of West Nile virus in Europe: knowledge gaps and research priorities.
West Nile virus (WNV) is continuously spreading across Europe, and other continents, i.e. North and South America and many other regions of the world. Despite the overall sporadic nature of outbreaks with cases of West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND) in Europe, the spillover events have increased and the virus has been introduced into new areas. The high genetic diversity of the virus, with r...
متن کاملGaps and mismatches between global conservation priorities and spending.
Several international conservation organizations have recently produced global priority maps to guide conservation activities and spending in their own and other conservation organizations. Surprisingly, it is not possible to directly evaluate the relationship between priorities and spending within a given organization because none of the organizations with global priority models tracks how the...
متن کاملDistribution patterns of Convolvulaceae in Iran: priorities for conservation
Assessing priorities is the most important action in conservation programs. Rudimentary, mapping of diversity, and distribution patterns have been used to set priorities on diverse scales. The distribution patterns of plant taxa, largely reflect an actual ecological niche. Convolvulaceae s.str exhibits cosmopolitan dispersal of diverse life forms and includes 50–60 genera comprising 1600–1700 s...
متن کاملConservation planning and priorities
Maybe the first law of conservation science should be that human population—which of course drives both threats to biodiversity and its conservation—is distributed unevenly around the world (Cincotta et al. 2000). This parallels a better-known first law of biodiversity science, that biodiversity itself is also distributed unevenly (Gaston 2000; Chapter 2). Were it not for these two patterns, co...
متن کاملChapter 29: Knowledge gaps and priorities for research on prevention of HPV infection and cervical cancer.
The recognition that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the necessary cause of cervical cancer brought new prevention paradigms in screening and HPV immunization. We now face many questions about how to implement an ambitious evidence-based agenda for cervical cancer prevention. Much is known about the epidemiology and natural history of HPV infection but several key variables remain to be...
